    Block Editor (Gutenberg) Styles

    Dec 11, 2018 · 2 Comments

Seasoned WordPress Theme for Lifestyle Bloggers

This is a demo post exploring the different styles in the block editor (codenamed "Gutenberg"). This is just a development post - we haven't yet released this publicly.

    [feast_advanced_jump_to]

    This is an H2

Most of your content should be contained in H2 subheadings.

In version 4.0.0 and later, body font-sizes have been standardized across all themes at 16px. Headings have been standardized using "em", meaning a multiple of the 16px body-font size.

For more details, see this blog post.

    This is an H3

H3 can be used to sub-categorize your content under H2 headings. You typically won't need to use these when making recipes posts.

    This is an H4

H4 is relatively uncommon, except in technical documentation. As a food blogger, anything you consider using for H4 should be either bumped up to H3, or simple paragraph text.

    This is an H5

No real application for this outside of technical and legal documents.

    This is an H6

Why even bother at this point?

    Simple Image Block

Galleries are new to the block editor, removing the need for plugins. The captions are relatively simple to create.

Testing will be needed to see what sizes are loaded for various devices (desktop, tablet, mobile). Mobile is the most important, making up approximately 75% of pageviews for most food blogs in 2018 and on.

Too many images can slow down your page.

    Ingredients

Unordered lists are a great way to display information that doesn't have a sequence, like ingredients.

    • This is an unordered list block
    • This is the second item in the list
    • Use unordered lists to create lists in which the sequence isn't important

The Feast Plugin now also has custom styling for button links, using your brand:

    Instructions

Use ordered lists to display lists that have a specific sequence to follow, like instructions.

    1. This is an ordered list block
    2. It's good to itemize sequential steps or items in an ordered list
    3. Using lists to break up your content and make it easier to parse is a good user-experience practice

The Feast Plugin contains an enhancement to convert text-based characters to fractions, so that you get ½ instead of 1 / 2 and ¼ instead of 1 / 4.

    Acronyms

The Feast Plugin contains an enhancement to convert recipe acronyms to improve screen reader accessibility, so that it reads the word teaspoon instead of "tee ess pee" and tablespoon instead of "tee bee ess pee".

The Secret Ingredient: How to Grow into a Top Food & Lifestyle Blog

This is an introduction to your post - you want to start with a summary of what you're writing about, and hook your readers!

The secret ingredient that makes your recipe pop, like pickle juice or fish sauce, can sometimes get weird.

    [feast_advanced_jump_to]

So, we’re getting weird in this blog post too. Or, at least, different.

Seasoned Pro WordPress Theme for Food Bloggers
Seasoned Pro WordPress Theme for Lifestyle Bloggers

Because the secret ingredient to growing a top food blog isn’t your innate talent, knowledge of spices, or the online course you took last year.

    It’s grit.

    What is grit?

In 2004, psychologist Angela Duckworth discovered why some individuals accomplished more than others of the same talent, intelligence, and resources.

Her results showed the predictive variable of real world performance was grit or a strength of character. Now, she’s a New York Times Bestseller, winner of the MacArthur “genius” award for 2013, and has a TED Talk….clearly, she’s onto something.

But how do you get grit?

In her TED Talk, Duckworth admits she doesn’t know the definitive answer for developing grit. But don’t give up yet (that wouldn’t be very gritty of you)!

She does mention two equations in her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance:

    • Talent x effort = skill
    • Skill x effort = achievement

In short, you could be born with a knack for something--in your case, probably cooking. And you could hone that talent by investing in a mentor, coach, or culinary school.

But to go from blogging for fun to blogging for a career requires a huge effort.

It’s throwing everything you have at the wall—like pasta--and seeing what sticks. It’s giving yourself permission to pivot when a strategy or idea doesn’t work (we did this, read about it here). And it’s having the courage to continue towards your goals even when you face failure—over and over again.

Most importantly, it’s getting started today.

Even if you don’t have an eye-catching logo, a strong following on Instagram, or a professional camera. You can apply effort and intention to what you’re able to do right now—or at least after reading this post.

So, what does grit look like in real-time?

Some people get into food blogging just to share, while others are hoping to turn their passion into a profession. But while you know your way around the kitchen, when it comes to starting your own website, you might not have any idea where to begin or what questions to ask first.

Don’t worry – regardless of why you’re starting your blog, we all have to start somewhere. Whether you’re going to DIY everything, or find someone who can walk you through the process, here’s a list of steps you can take to get your very own food blog up and running with as little bewilderment and confusion as possible.

    Buy Your Name

Once you’ve decided on a name, it’s time to buy your domain and make it internet-official! A top-level domain (like a .com, .net, or .org) costs around $10 when you register it using a domain registrar like NameCheap.

    Choose A Dependable Web Host

From WordPress updates, to security vulnerabilities, to unstable plugins that might break things in ways you don’t understand, WordPress can be a nightmare if you don’t have a trusted partner to help you deal with the issues that come up along the way – and the last thing you want to do is put all of your hard work at risk by leaving it unattended.

For some of the best help you can find in the WordPress hosting space, I always recommend building your site on Flywheel, a WordPress-only webhost that will automatically keep your WordPress installation up-to-date, secure, and backed up for you, with a dependable support team that’s available by email, live chat, and even phone.

If you registered your domain with Namecheap in the last step, they even have an easy-to-follow guide that will show you how to connect your domain to your Flywheel account.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOD FORWARD WITH A GREAT THEME

Style, speed, and stability matter when you’re putting yourself out there on the internet, and you won’t find a better combination of all three than our themes..

Our favorite pick is our very own Cravings Pro theme (oh hey!) into which we’ve poured all of the design experience and best practices we’ve learned from building food blogs for our own clients.

If you’re looking for a theme that puts your best food forward in style, Cravings Pro has everything you need, from font and color options in the Customizer to minimalist style, easy-to-install widgets and an improved recipe index.

    Install A Recipe Plugin

It’s easy enough to just type recipes into your post in WordPress, but if you’re putting this much work into making everything look good and work well, your recipes deserve the same tender loving care.

I always say that you’ve got three options to choose from here: Recipe Plugin, or Tasty Recipes. Each one is a little bit different, so be sure to weigh the pro’s and cons, but they’ll all help you organize, showcase, and share your recipes in style.

    START PUBLISHING!

It’s been a long process, but now the real work begins – it’s time to start writing! It’s easy to get the hang of publishing posts and pages in WordPress, but if you need a helping hand to guide you through the process, WP101 will teach you the basics in under an hour.

When you’re ready to do more with WordPress, it also includes a library of videos that’ll teach you more advanced skills and a forum where you can ask your questions.
